Carefree Highway Art Show & Book Release

September 8 @ 6:00 pm9:00 pm

In the summer of 1987, Mark Johnson and Kevin Nelson embarked on a coast-to-coast bike tour from Connecticut to California. Along the way, a friendly local reporter from North Dakota gifted them nine rolls of black & white film. They began chronicling their journey westward. Upon return, processing the film became a project for “later.” Kevin was inspired to revisit the task as the thirty year anniversary approached. Seeing the collection for the first time was like discovering a hidden treasure. Despite minimal experience taking photographs, the images were surprisingly in-focus and well-composed. They convey a window into some vestige of the old weird America, when life was more analog, less virtual, and two friends could discover the American West one pedal at a time.

Signed books and photographs will be available for sale. Lifelong friends Mark and Kevin, along with Kevin’s ‘87 Peugeot, will be in attendance to field questions and discuss the work.

Activity Guidelines:

  • Fun with a bike: The bike is only a tool to greater happiness. You’re encouraged to host events that aren’t “about the bike” but are cooler because a bike is incidentally involved.
  • Liability: We’re just a calendar for you to advertise your event. You’re responsible for the participants on your own ride/activity. If you want to cover your liability concerns, adapt & use the League of American Bicyclists ride waiver.
  • Plan ahead: Here’s a comic to help you out.
